Description
D:SOL MMXVI Cistus (Eau de Parfum) is a fascinating and thoughtful exploration of an often overlooked perfume ingredient. At its heart is cistus ladanifer, the same shrub from which cistus oil and labdanum are made, although these are not entirely the same substances. Labdanum is the sticky resin of the plant, prized for its rich, amber-colored density. Cistus, on the other hand, is an essential oil distilled from the leaves, stems, and flowering tops. Although there is some overlap in their scent profiles, cistus is brighter, sweeter, and spicier —less like melted resin and more like the air of a wild forest. Hints of honey, leather, and dried herbal teas intertwine, evoking sun-warmed shrubs and the resinous silence of coniferous forests.
Perfumer Delphine Thierry builds these qualities with sensitivity and an almost architectural sense of contrast. The cool, slightly camphorated opening of artemisia and minty buchu leaf gives the cistus a crystalline lift, while bergamot and geranium add a light, citrusy sparkle. The rose absolute in the heart note adds an elegant lightness, rounding off the raw edges of the cistus without overwhelming it. The radiance of the elemental resin adds a new dimension, extending the aromatic experience.
The dry-down of Cistus is particularly captivating: cistus absolute is enriched with salty ambergris, smoky papyrus, and incense. The effect is earthy yet noble, tangible yet airy, as if resin and smoke were woven into light.
D:SOL Cistus is memorable for its balance between naturalism and elegance. It seems raw and tied to the landscape, yet fluid and refined. A sincere tribute to cistus, it is both instructive and deeply sensual.
