Maya Njie Tobak (Eau de Parfum) draws inspiration for its leathery tobacco scent from the perfumer’s grandfather’s apartment, where tobacco and polished leather were inextricably linked to her memories of him. Meanwhile, another thread of the fragrance leads to The Gambia, to its leather craft markets. The result bridges the two worlds of Njie’s heritage: the nostalgia of her Scandinavian home and the tangible warmth of West Africa. Tobak evokes an intimate rather than dramatic effect — an olfactory portrait composed of familiar materials, weathered surfaces, and fading smoke.

Tobak opens with a dark and sharply defined character; the tobacco leaf simultaneously carries a dry smokiness and a delicate, natural sweetness. Vetiver immediately lends the fragrance an earthy, slightly root-like character, preventing the tobacco from becoming overly rich. Cinnamon gradually warms the perfume, while tonka bean brings a soft, almost almond-like sweetness that smooths out the fragrance’s rougher edges. As Tobak dries down, the leather comes increasingly to the forefront: polished, aged, and tactile, rather than aggressively animalic. Musk deepens this impression, lending a warm, leathery character to the base and transforming the initial smokiness into something captivating and unexpectedly soothing. The contrast between dryness, spiciness, sweetness, and worn leather gives the perfume its addictive tension.

Maya Njie Tobak is about intimacy and memories. The dark notes are more soothing than intimidating, reminding us that sometimes the scents we love most once belonged to someone else.
