Blackcliff Immanence Extrait de Parfum is a modern resiny incense fragrance – the scent of tropical smoke. At first glance, Immanence seems to emanate an internal inconsistency thanks to the unlikely absurdity of heady wafts of liturgical frankincense infused with fantastical pineapple. But closer meditation on the theme reveals a perfect logic to the mystical world Immanence brings to life. This is a perfumed convergence of flesh and devotion – Caribbean spirituality.

This fabulous potpourri of incense, smoke, resins and tropical pineapple forms a powerful whole in which all constituent parts combine to serve a grander purpose. The wisps of sweet smoke and incense are enlivened by a burst of ginger, black pepper and the juicy pineapple yields to sparkling notes of bergamot and a whisper of galbanum. Heady jasmine and lavender form the sensual heart which yearns for a lush base brimming with musky animalic tones, creamy woods and amber. With its surprise pairings of materials from diverse origins Immanence elevates each ingredient to more than it ever could be in and of itself.

Key to the depth of storytelling in Blackcliff Immanence, resinous notes of amyris and elemi as well as musty papyrus channel the image of ancient scrolls pirated away to the Caribbean. The multitude of olfactive histories in Immanence links to an equally deep interplay of interwoven textures – from papery parchment to plush cashmeran and balsams, and from ashy, woody embers to silken smoke, Immanence draws us ever inwards to its immersive experience.

Blackcliff Immanence perfectly showcases the sensitivity of brand founder and creative director Tomilson Bynoe for the tropical. Having been born in Barbados he is attuned to the olfactive orchestra of the Caribbean. He distils the exotic into his Blackcliff bottles. Unique, rugged stones that look as if they themselves have been hewn from the black cliffs that jut from the azure seas of the West Indies.
