Grandiflora Saskia Eau de Parfum won the 2022 Art and Olfaction Award in the Independant Category in Miami. The composer of this beautifully simple, yet intriguingly mysterious scent is Christophe Laudamiel, one of the world’s renowned parfumeurs. Only available in Europe at 7scents, this unique Eau de Parfum is a creamy soft, glowing gardenia fragrance that captures the 360 degree experience of walking into a luxury flower shop. Grandiflora is the name of an iconic florist institution in Sydney’s Potts Point and the name of the perfume itself makes reference to the eponymous Saskia Havekes, the shop’s visionary founder.

Saskia opens with surround-scent intensity, translating the enigmatic, yet addictive aroma of a florists into a creamy white floral bouquet. Gardenia emerges from the olfactory tapestry and feels delicately decadent. A fantasy veil of magnolia hints at the effervescent guaziness of champagne – the kind of expensive bubbly that forms a luxurious foam when poured. Mouthwatering, exquisite and made to make you feel special. The arrangement is soft and comforting, yet a hint of pepperiness emerges from the cream notes, adding to both balance and richness.

Grandiflora Saskia has an ambitious aim, to capture the sensual complexity of flowers, and a genius flowershop accord in the heart goes some way to translate the opulent scale of Saskia’s famous floral shop into scent form. In order to achieve the mesmerizing aroma of fully rounded nature, Saskia not only reflects the flawlessness of the finished product (and the glamour of Grandiflora’s clients), it also embraces the painstaking, hands-on work of the artisan – knee deep in petals, taming thorny stems, at the mercy of the fragility and ephemerality of the raw material. Elements of petrichor and damp soil complete the full olfactory palate of this floral paradise.

But Saskia is more than a fragrance about a flowershop: from first impact to long-lingering afterglow this niche perfume is the interpretive essence of the Grandiflora store itself. It reflects how it has been for Saskia Havekes, working her 25 years of floral magic surrounded by both the enduring and the ever-shifting redolence of nature’s most remarkable perfumes.
Christophe Laudamiel brings wit and an iconoclastic intellect to the practice and has achieved an unsurpassed balance between art and science. A deserving Art and Olfaction win!
