Mendittorosa Albatros Eau de Parfum is a glittering ozonic fragrance for those who fly solo and fly high between the roaring froth of the ocean and the open-ended sky. Albatros is inspired by the poem of the same name by Charles Baudelaire. In the poem (included below) Baudelaire uses the albatross as a metaphor for the dizzying heights to which poets must ascend when embarking on their craft. Albatros wings are like a poet’s sensitivity: they allow us to fly high; but they also cause us to stumble.

Mendittorosa Albatros Eau de Parfum soars in its opening thanks to expansive ozonic notes, which seem to capture the unending atmosphere of open air. Light-headed aldehydes flit and swoop with the freedom of maritime skies, while sparkling, mirage-like citrus tones of pineapple and mandarin hover just over the horizon. Despite the spaciness of its top notes, Albatros is a well built creation. Sleek and refined, Albatros has a streamlined simplicity, like a skill honed for optimal flight.

It’s not all easy gliding for an albatross. Salty undercurrents remind us that sea and sky merge in the open ocean. Salt also flows in tears. Those who fly high risk a crash. But just as the salt in tears cleanses, a crash can restore equilibrium, bring balance. A beautiful nectar sweetness glows through Albatros’ salty seafaring notes. Like the harvested juice of creativity, it fuels us as we move forwards. And when we fall, we can remake and rebuild ourselves – the faint glow of a beautifully constructed rose accord promises that sensitivity will bloom again in the distant place where sea meets sky.

Albatros is the third and final installment of Menditorossa’s Versi Trilogy within the Odori D’Anima Series. Along with two previous installments, Ithaka and Orlo; Albatros is based on poetry. In Albatros Eau de Parfum the poet him/herself takes centre stage, as he/she makes pioneering journeys into language and the human soul. What better way to connect with the poet at hand than to enjoy Eli Segal’s translation of ‘The Albatross’ by Charles Baudelaire:

Often, to amuse themselves the men of the crew
Lay hold of the albatross, vast birds of the seas—
Who follow, sluggish companions of the voyage,
The ship gliding on the bitter gulfs.

Hardly have they placed them on the planks,
Than these kings of the azure, clumsy and shameful,
Let, piteously, their great wings in white,
Like oars, drag at their sides.

This winged traveler, how he is awkward and weak!
He, lately so handsome, how comic he is and uncomely!
Someone bothers his beak with a short pipe,
Another imitates, limping, the ill thing that flew!

The poet resembles the prince of the clouds
Who is friendly to the tempest and laughs at the bowman;
Banished to ground in the midst of hootings,
His wings, those of a giant, hinder him from walking.
