Spell 125 is the seventh fragrance released in Papillon’s seventh year, on the seventh day of the seventh month. In ancient Egypt too, the number 7 was the number of numbers and was even considered the number of the Gods. It is these deep esoteric connections that thread together the inspiration and composition for Spell 125 and make us all the more glad to have it here in 7scents!

Papillon Artisan Perfumes Spell 125 Eau de Parfum is a woody amber incense fragrance entwined with magic, history and ancient mystery. Top notes are surprisingly outdoorsy given the scent’s Ancient Egyptian inspiration, thanks to the eucalyptic brightness of Siberian pine. But Spell 125 soon plays tricks on the senses – just when you feel invigorated and rosy-cheeked the solidity of the pine pulls back, leaving floaty wafts of incense in its wake. Spell 125 takes us down a mysterious path in which the cool and calm glow of a very particular green sacra frankincense rises upwards to haunt us. This is the kind of Frankincense typical of cold western European churches – more sombre beauty of a peaceful requiem than ceremonial pomp and circumstance.

To wear Spell 125 is to revel in the beautiful mysteries of the silent unknown. A weightless shroud of lucent white ambergris uplifts with its whispers of salt and expansive sea. An ethereal cleanse for skin alongside resins slicked with wintergreen powder. Spell 125 is a carefully balanced construction taking you to a place between states. As if suspended in the lustre of ylang ylang we float betwixt this world and the next. As the scent softens on the skin we move from cool woods and profund waters into something more intimate, thanks to musky notes of hemlock and a silk-smooth sandalwood. Spell 125 is the longest spell in the Egyptian Book of the Dead. It was often buried with the dead in order to help them pass the weighing of the heart ritual that determined who may enter the afterlife and who may not. The deceased was led by Anubis into the presence of Osiris, at which point their heart was weighed against a feather. Only hearts lighter than a feather were permitted entry. A perfect representation of this mystical process, Papillon Artisan Perfumes Spell 125 delicately renders the lightness of the soul, with just a sliver of underworld shadows, into a beautiful incense perfume – showing us the wonderful halfway space between light and dark, life and death.
