Senyokô Hora de la Verdad Sombra is a deep and dark leather fragrance of oil-slicked animalics, peppery woods, pitch black bleeding hides and sacrificial smoke – a fragrance inspired by tough masculine elegance. Whereas Senyokô Hora de la Verdad Sol showcased the glittering glamour of bullfighting and was ‘all sun and no shadow’, Hora de la Verdad Sombra explores the dark underbelly of the bullring. Sombra not only means shadow in Spanish it is also used to denote the shady side of a bullfighting arena and perfectly describes the descent from stark sun and bright red to the murky embrace of death. Both Sombra and the original were inspired by Hemmingway’s ‘Death in the Afternoon’, an non-fiction account of the beauty and cruelty of Spanish bullfighting tradition.

Senyoko Hora de la Verdad Sombra opens with an intensely sinister, brooding animalicy as a complex interplay of castoreum, hyraceum, civet and musks abounds. A distinctive hit of white pepper offers wood-spiced contrast while a pitch black leather accord teamed with earthy Spanish saffron channels the tang of tanned hides. The body of a powerful, sweating creature haunts Sombra, yet a sharp, dagger-like metallic accord pierces the beast like an olfactive coup de grâce. It’s not difficult to make the connection between ‘sombra’ and the English ‘sombre’ as menacing mineralic notes leak through the arrangement like inky blotches of spilled blood – once lifegiving but now signifying death.

Senyoko Hora de la Verdad Sombra is butch. Its array of hard hitting masculine notes suggests a life of labour and toil – the flipside of the colourful bullring pantomime. This is a spectacle of oils, smoke, tar, leather, and fumes that forms multiple, unpretty layers of dark and darker. It is powerful in its unforgivingness. Greased up, ready for battle and sexually sado-masochistic. Essential to all BDSM arrangements, the power dynamic between Hora de la Verdad Sol and Sombra functions as two sides of the same coin. Envisioned like the beauty of chiaroscuro effects (the balance of light and dark in Renaissance painting), there can be no sunlight without shadow. Sombra is a dark-soul struggle between the brutal reality of the bullfight concealed by its glamorous facade. And the blurry lines between the noble and savage.

When the industrial grit and raw carnality gradually settle on the skin a mysterious and regal Andalusian incense facet wafts through the base. There is a luxuriously well-crafted machine under this rough edged exterior. The high-end skankiness of oud, balsamic guaiac wood and the rich resins of Spanish labdanum rise up around the smoky birch notes to form a sacrificial funeral pyre about to be lit.

Senyokô Hora de la Verdad Sombra Eau de Parfum is a case in point, that just as in tango, it takes two to bullfight. Every matador needs a bull, every glorious victory coincides with a defeat and there is a knife edge separating an adrenaline fuelled moment in the sunlit ring and the eternal shadows of death.
