Description
Wamaq Orris Oud (Extrait de Parfum) is a prime example of why small niche perfume houses are still important, where passion, originality, and the quality of raw materials remain at the heart of perfume making. The young Saudi brand Wamaq, whose name poetically translates as “deeply loved,” seems much more like an intimate confession than a commercial venture with its latest fragrance. The perfume was created by Saudi indie perfumer Ibrahim Fuhaid, who is renowned for his uncompromising vision.
Orris Oud exceeds expectations right from the opening notes. Instead of presenting oud in an overtly animalic or dominant way, the perfume focuses on a sophisticated dialogue between beauty and wild nature. The opening accords are saturated with orris, with deep, powdery, woody tones. The oud lurks beneath the surface, perceptible before it becomes clearly audible, creating tension rather than contrast.
As Wamaq Orris Oud unfolds, the perfume’s radiance is revealed. Thai prachin oud takes center stage, bringing with it an earthy, mossy depth, with faint tobacco and smoky sweetness, subtly enhanced by Indian and Cambodian oud. The orris, derived from matured iris germanica, never becomes sweet. Instead, it remains cool, shadowy, and dignified, allowing both materials to exist as equal protagonists.
Orris Oud is textured and melancholic, evoking damp soil, fading autumn light, and dark blue and brown wool fabrics. Orris Oud can be worn as invisible luxury, soft as cashmere, yet with emotional weight. It has a restrained effect, remaining warm and quietly authoritative, proving that true sophistication often manifests itself in the shadows rather than in the light.
