d.grayi Alter Oud (Extrait de Parfum) was nominated for the Best Perfume Prize at the Art and Olfaction Awards in 2023 in the Artisan Category.

d.grayi Alter Oud is a woody incense oud fragrance representing a highly modern take on eastern Asian heritage. Alter Oud is a play on the word ‘altar’ and the concept of alter ego stemming from the duality of perfumer James ‘Miju’ Nguyen’s Vietnamese American identity.

The perfume pays homage to domestic Buddhist traditions. Top notes reflect the family’s revered shrine with the sweet and sour sparkle of mangosteen and polished wood. The opening also blends the sensory and the spiritual with notes of incense joss sticks placed in a bowl of jasmine rice – a dark gourmand offering good fortune.

Fruits, offered for protection and clarity, give the scent a freshness to counteract the wood and incense. Notes of saffron create a sense of oriental luxury. The peppy tang of mustard and a tincture of pho herbs evoke something unmistakably Vietnamese. Surrounding all, oud imbues the arrangement with a sense of magic.

d.grayi Alter Oud is a highly personal niche perfume. A scent that combines an intensity of performance with an ethereal lightness – it is a fresh yet deep, bittersweet and gleaming amber that gets both attention and compliments, while all the time maintaining an air of dignified respect to both nature and a rich cultural heritage.
