Filippo Sorcinelli né il giorno né l’ora Extrait de Parfum is a darkly ominous interplay of woods, spices and musks designed to confront our desire for fear. The twelfth fragrance in Filippo Sorcinelli’s monolithic UNUM collection, né il giorno né l’ora articulates seemingly chaotic primordial emotions where anxiety and arousal rise up side by side within us.

Cedar wood, with its cumin-spiced bodyheat aroma replicates our heightened physical response to fear. These tense, adrenaline sweat top notes mask a more tender floral heart, while a deftly mixed marine note conjures images of salty skin. Sandalwood, musk and amber in the base reveal an obsessively erotic skin accord – showcasing how a raised pulse, a pounding heart and a breathless body flushed with hormones are symptoms of both aversion and arousal.

When these dormant, hidden impulses are awoken, a dangerous eroticism is triggered, ‘making the impossible possible’. We are animals of contradictions and desires – perhaps we only truly feel alive when we accept our body’s instinctive messages that remind us: scary is sexy!

Filippo Sorcinelli writes: ‘Né il giorno né l’ora (neither the day nor the hour) asks us to face our fears on a deeper, more intense level, evoking conflicting emotions and experiencing the seductive charms of danger – an ‘amor fati’ as Nietzsche claimed – or at least, the presence of things beyond our control. This is a characteristic feature of horror literature (and more); it’s the power of the uncontrolled over us. Yet the existence of fear always requires something else: not lack of courage, but the presence of what we most desire. What remains most men’s highest aspiration is also a harbinger of trouble: freedom. The perfume conveys the idea of destruction, the choice to be silent, and the introspection needed to delve into the depths of the skin’s most remote existence.’

‘neither the day nor the hour’, references the parable of the ten virgins from the Gospel of Matthew, in which five virgins were barred entry to the temple for neglecting to fill their oil lamps. The moral of the story is, always be prepared because we don’t know when our time has come. The packaging is in line with the UNUM collection; this time it is sealed with a cold transparent film and a silver label. The bottle (also silver) is placed in a ‘silent’ black velvet bag, sealed in a heat-shrunk sheath which needs to be cut physically using the metal scissors contained in the box.

His mysterious creative world combines ancient gothic gloom with cutting edge modernity in one darkly immersive aesthetic.
