Description
Maya Njie Vanilla (Eau de Parfum) transforms one of Sweden’s most iconic flavor combinations into an intimate perfume experience. Vanilla and cardamom evoke the scent of homemade pastries that Maya Njie remembers from her childhood in Sweden. In keeping with this, the family photo accompanying the perfume depicts her Uncle Lars on the day of his wedding in Nyköping in 1971. The image evokes gatherings, celebrations, and the comforting, familiar feeling of being together. Vanilj transforms this warmth, in Njie’s words, into a “Scandinavian gourmand” fragrance: sweet and soothing, yet grounded by the dry woods and earthy textures of the Swedish landscape.
Vanilj opens with creamy vanilla, instantly interwoven by the cool, aromatic spiciness of cardamom. Rather than being sugary, the sweetness quickly meets patchouli and cedarwood, giving the fragrance a dry, slightly earthy direction. Cardamom continually flashes through the perfume, balancing the soft notes with its green, peppery freshness. As the fragrance warms, the vanilla becomes rounder and more powdery, maturing into a delicate, bourbon-like richness. Amber and musk further smooth out the edges, creating a warm, close to the skin drydown in which sweetness, spiciness, and woody notes seem to melt together. The result is gourmand in character, without coming across as a dessert.
Maya Njie Vanilla is about that familiar feeling, which it quietly elevates to something sensual. It captures the warmth, the joy of home and shared memories, while retaining the restraint and natural simplicity that runs through Njie’s Scandinavian-inspired fragrances.
Key notes: vanilla, cardamom, patchouli, musk, cedarwood, amber
Photographic inspiration: Maya’s uncle Lars getting married. Lars was a tree surgeon by trade and hobbyist photographer who took many of the family photographs that inspired Maya to formulate. Nyköping, Sweden 1971.
The familiar embrace of get togethers and celebrations at home give warmth. Captured images advocate opportunities to reminisce.
