Imaginary Authors Whispered Myths Eau de Parfum is an artfully constructed woody oud fragrance that comes to life before our nose. Each Imaginary Authors scent is inspired by a piece of fictitious literature and Whispered Myths is based on a fanciful novel in which a museum guard experiences ancient statues and figures within paintings coming to life while on duty.

Whispered Myths is a mysterious fragrance that opens with a sense of no-frills, classically proportioned beauty. Initial notes have the cool and distanced formality of an old pantheon or museum statuary. Timber purified by alcohol, stately busts hewn from stone or etched from wood, canvas brushed in oil and turpentine – there is a sense of a space preserved in perfection. This is a fragrance with a stately stature, an olfactive recreation of the ghostly echoes in the halls of a venerated museum.

Like olfactive alchemy, Whispered Myths moves beyond its sense of steady permanence. As the alcoholic terpenes evaporate so too does the pallor of abandoned antiquity. A paired down cedar note brings warmth to the statuesque opening, evoking planed wood – smooth but with a homely whisper of wood shavings. The alabaster muskiness of ambrette seed adds a gentle but seductive hint of must and dust, aromatic reminders of time passing.

Then something striking happens: as if the statues have dislodged themselves and paintings come to life. Heat becomes heartbeat thanks to natural Cambodian oud teamed with honeyed cantaloupe, which rise up, pulsating with the animalic warmth of a lived body.

From here Imaginary Authors Whispered Myths darkens and deepens into something more. The leathery side of oud manifests itself during drydown. It is at once dank, tangy and sensual, with carnal facets akin to hyraceum.

But Whispered Myths is scented art after all, its fascinating formality shows restraint. The oud is not in your face, it maintains an academic distance which has the gauzy and floaty airniness of a delicate tracing. Imaginary Authors Whispered Myths is more like a holographic image as it hovers about the skin. In it you may be able to trace the outlines of a dynamic wooden structure, but it remains an alluring apparition. Like a shipwreck eternally suspended in a maritime painting – it is always there before our eyes but locked ever-elusively out of reach.

Synopsis: “When the long hours Azzam Issa pulls at his family’s bakery begin to interfere with his day-job as a security guard at The Louvre, things turn bizarre. Angelic creatures move from one painting to the next and statues speak to him in cryptic whispers. The delusions are a nuisance and the few hours of sleep he is afforded between jobs are no better; dominated by visits from ancient mariners and supernatural figures from worlds past. It isn’t until he begins to listen to these apparitions that he becomes truly unhinged. In the frantic search for the true identities of these lost souls, Azzam discovers something far more remarkable, his own.”
