Miguel Matos Tabacco Smeraldo (Extrait de Parfum) won the Best Perfume Prize at the Art and Olfaction Awards in 2023 in the Artisan Category.

Miguel Matos Tabacco Smeraldo is a rich and woody tobacco fragrance. Meaning ‘emerald tobacco’ in Italian, the proof is in the juice. It is thick, dense and deep emerald in tone. Tobacco Smeraldo is not at all about tobacco in its smoked form, rather it is an exploration of pure tobacco leaf as if harvested from a magical, meadowy fantasyland that is both sunkissed and moist.

The opening has a sweet and haylike profile with the gently unfolding floralcy of pipe tobacco. Narcissus and vanilla are rich in honeyed almond tones. Alongside Tabacco Smeraldo’s exotic warmth arises the comforting darkness of dense resins and the dampness of violet leaf. Picture dewy, green tobacco drying in a leather pouch – the reassuringly soft and balmy aroma gives the air of comfort and maturity.

A musky base preserves the sense of well worn leather, while husky woods turn attention to the natural aspects of tobacco – an ancient bush that gently stimulates and gives pleasure. Tobacco Smeraldo is an addictive fragrance for those with a bohemian streak. A niche perfume for the independent minded with a nostalgia for an otherworldly place: a place both comfortably familiar and totally unexplored.
